Friday evening, I had dinner with Pam and Kathy Mc, who came down for a visit, and finally got to meet Rhonda - one of the girls going to Paris next year. We went to On the Border, and had some yummy food, and visited, and had a couple drinks.
Saturday, Kathy and I hit the ground running. We hit Hobby Lobby when they opened at 9am. Spent about an hour and half, plus all our budgets, there. But we still had more stops to make. We went down to Sam Flax, an art supply store, to buy envelopes. Kathy was looking for French ribbon, and we hit the mother-lode there. Gorgeous stuff!

From there, we went to Binder's, another art supply store. We were looking for the make-your-own rub-on stuff. They said they still had one in stock, but couldn't find it. :-( Didn't stop us from finding other stuff, though!
When we left there, we were making our way to the interstate when Kathy spotted The Container Store. We found all kinds of cool stuff, but the find of the day was a rolling tote that is very light-weight. I WILL have to go back down there to get one before we go to Paris! It's very cool!
We finally made our way up to Archiver's, after which, we were exhausted. So we headed back to the house to ooh-and-aah over and bond with our finds. While we were downstairs, we started thinking about our projects for Sunday, and ended up making Kathy's fishing-themed shadowbox. It is absolutely darling! While we were working on it, we decided that we needed to run out to Hobby Lobby to see about a different background. When we were done with it, we
started thinking about a Paris-themed shadowbox. Decided we needed some black & white Toile fabric, so we ran out to Walmart. I haven't been in Walmart in over a month because they always aggravate the beejesus out of me. But this was an art emergency! They didn't let me down Saturday night! We got our fabric, and picked up a couple other things, including spray adhesive (since I can't find mine) and headed to the check-outs. The lines were AWFUL! So, against everything I stand for, I decided I'd do self-checkout. The minute I stepped to the line, they shut it down. So we set everything down, and left. I have renewed my vow not to return, and sent Steve out on Sunday morning to buy the spray adhesive.Sunday morning, Pam rejoined us, and Karen came out from Marietta. My friend Mary Jane came over too, and we all made art! We all did shadowboxes, and I started and finished one that I've been thinking about since May, for Olivia's 2nd Birthday next week:
My mother had given me my grandmother's bedspread, which was torn and moth-eaten. I used some of that for the background. The dress on the paper doll is made from one of Olivia's baby blankets. Her apron is part of something my mother crocheted. The first dress, from the left, is made from one of her mother's (my sister-in-law) maternity dresses. The pink lace on it was tatted by my grandmother. The dress on the far right is made from the fabric of a caftan my mother made for herself when I was a child. Dipping it in the wax/resin really changed it's
appearance!I had such a fun weekend with my friends! We definitely need to do it more often!

Oooh, Darya! What a wonderful, fun, and exhausting weekend! Sounds marvelous! I LOVE your adorable shadow box - and how touching that you used fabric and tatting that have so much sentimental value! I would love to do one some day.

Way cool shadow box. And, I'm green with envy over the shopping and eating and talking.

fun art, great recap! I'm so glad you had an awesome weekend with awesome friends and art!
Your shadow box is a treasure. I'm sure Olivia will have up on her wall for years to come. What a wonderful idea to use scrap fabric from memorable articles of clothing. Did you dip the cloth in melted wax? Also, it sounds as if you all had way to much fun.
