Conflicted

It's gonna be a LONG summer in Lawrenceville. And I'm gonna miss most of it.

The weather doesn't really feel like summer. Yesterday morning was pretty, but by the time I got to work, the rain had set in. Off and on all afternoon. And it's a tiny bit cooler. That is, until you start running, chasing perps.

My first call was the usual Saturday messed-up-call-of-the-day. Dispatch gave me a Shoplifting, suspect in custody. They advised it was a juvenile. Groan! I get over there and the kid says he's sixteen, but that his dad is on the way with money to pay for what he had stolen. Said he just wanted to try the shoes out with his skateboard and went outside to do that. Juvenile Court is a pain, but juveniles are somewhat easy. It's just waiting for the parents that's the worst. The kid is pacing and sweating and really annoying.

He took a pair of skate-boarding shoes at a skate shop. Said he just wanted to try the shoes out with his skateboard and went outside to do that. My first red flag is that this kid is five foot five and weighs about 350 pounds. I know that most of the skateboarders are skinny kids. It amazes me what they can do with those boards, and it requires a lot of muscle and energy.

Well, "Dad" shows up and I asked him if he was this kid's father. He says, "A really close friend." Red flag number two. The kid says, "Dad!" and the guy says, "Well, both." Huh? Then he says something about the kid being eighteen. Red flag number three and four.

Well, red flags start popping up all over the place when I look at the man's identification and see that he would only be 11 years older than the kid. So I start asking more questions.

The "kid" is nineteen and has been arrested before. The "dad" is a friend of his. I arrested the thief for theft by shoplifting, giving a false name, giving a false date of birth, and obstruction. His friend couldn't grasp why I arrested him for obstruction.

When I got done at the jail, I had a few minutes to putz around. But by then the rain had moved in and we don't do traffic in the rain - if it can be helped.

They gave Brandon and I a suspicious person call at a used car dealership. We get over there and are checking the buildings when we hear someone moving around in one of the trailers that they use for an office. We start to the back of the building in time to see a guy running from the building. So we take off after him.

Brandon, since he is 20 years younger than me, is close on him, and I start toward where i can cut him off. But he jumped the 10 foot fence at the mental hospital, so we set up a perimeter to wait for the K9. Meanwhile, it starts to POUR rain. Great! Just great!

Well, the guy got away. We got soaked. But the owner of the dealership was a satisfied customer because we had made the effort. We fingerprinted the window he used. And while we were doing that, it was discovered that the reason the guy had broken in was to use the computer in the office. He had left himself logged in on his Instant Messenger and E-mail. We still don't know who he is, but we do have a starting point.

That took care of most of the shift, and we worked on our reports until morning watch got started, then we finally got dinner. I must say "THANK YOU" to the anonymous citizens who paid for ALL of our dinner last night. It makes our night when someone expresses their appreciation. Especially after a night like that.

We then finished our reports, and managed to get out of there pretty much on time.

I have 36 days until my hand surgery. If this is what the first couple weeks of summer has been like, I'm almost glad I'm gonna miss it. But I do like the excitement and to be busy, and I have gotten that! So it makes me sad that I will miss it.....
