We are back from Paris! It was exhausting, but oh-so-much fun! The flights were long and uncomfortable, but the in between was very much worth it.
We got back late on Sunday and I hit the ground running on Monday. I had to go get my patrol car and pick up Allie. She was ready to come home, but she wasn't ready to leave Ozzie. I really should get her a playmate, but I just don't think I can handle two dogs. Besides, who would I get to babysit?
I went back to work on Tuesday. I owed Chris two days for working for me on Saturday and Sunday, so I was scheduled for six in a row. We were very busy on Tuesday, which was a good thing. By the time I clocked out at 1am, I had had four report calls. I was on my way home when Dispatch gave the Morning Watch supervisor a 911 hang-up call at the Applebee's. It just so happened that I was in front of the business, and since all other units were busy, I said I'd check on it. These are usually nothing. This time though, it was in reference to counterfeit $20 bills. So I took another report. No big deal. The supervisor said I could do it the next day.
We were pretty slow on Wednesday and Thursday. Steady with piddly calls, or stuff that I backed other officers up on. But I ended the shift with no paperwork. Although, I feel like I should have at least written a speeding ticket, as my Radar permit arrived on Wednesday. I still haven't written one. But I will soon...
Friday, Halloween, was fairly quiet considering. I did take two to jail. One for Shoplifting, and one for Domestic Violence. Then we got a call of a fight in the parking lot of the Kentucky Fried Chicken, with shots fired. It was gang bull-shit, and although we located the "victims", they were uncooperative. But since shots were fired, I figured I better write a report.
Saturday, pretty early in the shift, I got a call of a Suspicious Person at one of our worst apartment complexes. It turns out the guy was the perpetrator of a Theft report I took on Tuesday, and an attempted Home Invasion that Jimmy handled on Wednesday. I didn't know it at the time. I saw the guy as he was described on the sidewalk. I told him to "Stop," but he kept walking and ducked into one of the apartments. I had to take a second to knock on the door and use caution, but when I opened the door, there were several people inside, none of which were him, and they said he had run out the back door. I wasn't going to cross through there since I didn't know their relationship to him, and by the time I got around back, he was gone. The complainant apparently still had sight of him and said he lost him at Walmart across the street. But now I had a name. And I knew where he "stays". So I took a warrant for him for Obstruction.
Later on, I got a call from my same Theft victims. They had caught him trying to steal their electricity again. We searched for him for quite a while. Even got out the K9 unit. I got the maintenance man of the apartment complex to bring me a key. But I was never able to find him. I took two more warrants for him for both incidents of Theft, and spent a good bit of time on Sunday looking for the guy, and wrapping up the paperwork to close those cases. He'll turn up.
I never thought I would say there was a good time to have a sinus infection. Yesterday, Johnny and Jimmy responded to an 87 (check someone to make sure they are okay) on an old man no one had heard from in a week. I rode over that way, but wasn't clear on their radio traffic. When I got there, I asked was the guy there, and was he dead. They said, "Can't you smell him?" Um, no. The house smelt a little musty to me, but otherwise, even when I walked in the bedroom to help look for ID, it didn't hit me. That's two for two for Johnny. I told them that if I ever don't show up for work, DON'T send Johnny to check on me...
Later on, I was standing at the Quik Trip talking to my sergeant and Aaron, and I was thinking, "That man pumping gas sure looks like Bill Sammons." He used to work for us, years ago. I got in my car to go to a call with Aaron, when the Sergeant started walking toward the man, and sure enough, that's who it was so I rolled down my window to say, "Hi!" He looked a the Sergeant and says, "Is that someone I'm supposed to know?" The Sarge says, "Yeah, Darya," and Bill laughed and said he had heard I had gone back to the road. He said he had seen me standing there, but didn't recognize me. He said, "Where's the rest of you?," meaning my weight-loss. I said, "I divorced it." LOL! Then the discussion rolled around to the resignation of my replacement and he asked if I was going back to the Chief's office. The Sergeant immediately said, "Hell NO! She's not leaving my shift." That was a good feeling.
Here is what that was all about:
On Thursday morning, I logged into my computer to check my e-mail. As soon as I did, my Instant Messenger went off. It was the girls in Records with the latest news. It seems that my replacement - who has turned out to be a complete idiot - has tendered her resignation. But that's only the coup de gras.
It seems that while I was gone, she developed "cancer". Why anyone would do this is beyond me! She told several people several slightly different versions of a story that involves her having cervical cancer and needing radiation. She asked the girls in Records to cover for her with getting payroll out, saying that she was having a "procedure" done. She told some of the guys that she had a tumor, and others a "lesion" removed. But never defined "procedure." Got the Mayor's secretary all upset over what would happen to her children if she didn't survive this cancer. She finally left past the time that she was supposed to have had this thing done, saying she had called the doctor to let them know she was running late.
On Monday, the girls asked her how everything went. They had already thrown the bull-shit flag amongst themselves on the whole thing, based on her track record. She told them she had rented eight movies and laid around the house all weekend. Jessica, just 'cause she was bored, went to Nicole's MySpace page. She had uploaded over 100 photographs from her weekend in Helen, Georgia (Oktoberfest-country). They showed her in a hot-tub and drinking in a bar with these scuzzy-looking guys with their heads buried in her boobs. You know, party pictures. All this after she had just had some sort of female surgery... Needless to say, the girls were pissed. They made sure that the Mayor's secretary saw them. And Jeff, who really can't stand the woman, had begun to set the wheels in motion to get her some financial aid from the flower fund. He was pissed too!
On Thursday, the rumor starts flying that she has resigned effective around Thanksgiving. I went to the Major to verify. He said she had indeed given the Chief her notice. He and I had a long talk about her replacement and other issues surrounding her being hired in the first place.
My question is: If you had cancer and were going to need radiation and who-knows-what-all else, would you quit a good, secure job with good insurance and disability benefits?
On Friday, we heard that she has asked to stay until the end of the year. I'm waiting to see when she will rescind her resignation, and if he will allow her to.

Sounds like you had a pretty rough week. I don't know how you went back to work so quickly. You are a barrel full of energy.
I knew they could never find a replacement for you. What a character.
Take it easy and rest.
