OUCH!

I knew this day was coming, so I'm not surprised....

I went to the hand-doctor last month for a shot of cortisone in my left thumb. It did absolutely nothing for the pain in my hand. My right hand had also started to act up, but he didn't want to do both in the same day. So that was the reason for my return visit today....

We discussed what to do about my left hand, and agreed that surgery is the only option left. He said it is a long recovery time, but in the end, I'll be glad I did it. Okay. Like I said, I knew this day was coming, so I'm gonna take the plunge. Get it over with. He said, "I'll inject your right hand when you are under anesthesia." That is all well and good, since it is VERY painful. Like, pass-out kind of pain. But I'm not ready for the surgery just yet. He moves pretty fast. He removed a cyst off my right index finger, twice. He did them the same week that I went to see him about it. He would have done this surgery next week if I was ready. But I've paid big bucks to go to Art and Soul in Hampton, VA in May. No way I'm going to be incapacitated during that time frame! So one VERY painful injection later, I am back in the office icing my right hand while trying to type.

The surgery is scheduled for Friday, May 18, at 10am....

The scary thing is this: I went to put the dates on my desk calendar, and my calendar is missing a page. THAT page! I hope I shouldn't be seeing this as a sign....

Darya, good luck with your hand until surgery. I had surgery on my right hand 4 years ago (tendon taken out of arm, put in thumb to replace non-existent ligament, disintegrating bones taken out, etc) and it was a slow but successful recovery. I completely understand why you want to wait until after Art & Soul. I think the calendar page was missing, so that you wouldn't schedule anything else while you're supposed to have surgery.

Darya,
I KNOW aobut those stupid injections of cortisone in the hand! Been there, done that. Mine was in my wrist... directly in my write. It was several years ago and I was out of work for a month, which is BAD for a hairdresser! I got the shot from hell and it did nothing.. it actually put me in more pain. It was excruciating! I ended up going to a guy that did accupressure. He worked some pressure points in my wrist, thumb (which was also being affected by all the pain) and my upper back... and I was able to use my hand when I walked out of his office that day! Before that, I couldn't even pick up a glass without screaming in pain! I went right back to work! I did go back to him a few more times for follow up and have never dealt with that again! Now that I'm older, I can tell that arthritis is starting in that thumb which is from major over use in my hairdresser days, I think. But anyway, you might want to think outside the box before you have surgery...

Darya,
I'm sorry to read that you have to have surgery. I hope you'll be able to stay home from work and have a semi-vacation since it's your left hand.

Oh no, I am so sorry to hear this Darya. I just saw your Hampton samples, read your posts, and saw you were going to be out for a while.
I am looking forward to seeing you next week and hopefully you will be as good as new after the surgery.
