Last week, I got handed a two-day suspension for a fender bender I had in the parking lot at work. I admit I deserved a day off because I need to be more careful. This was my third accident, but they didn't count the first one.
In the first one, I was merging from one one-way street onto another. There was a light shining on the "Welcome to Downtown Historic Lawrenceville" sign. When you merged at night, you would think it was another car coming. Well, I looked and saw what I thought was the sign, but turned out to be a car, and sideswiped it. There was no damage to my car, and little damage to the other car. Honestly, I didn't even realized that I hit her. Never felt the impact. I thought I had cut her off when I realized she was there, and that she was just cussing me out. I rolled down my window to apologize and she told me I hit her. They have since fixed that sign and the light.
For the second accident, I received a "verbal reprimand". I tried to park in a space at the jail that is just a little to small for a car. I was in a hurry to get to court and misjudged my clearance. There was no damage to either vehicle in that case, but I did the right thing and reported it.
The last one was a couple weeks ago. Maybe I should say the most recent one. I got in my car to respond to a call. I checked to my left, glanced at my screen, and checked to my right. I then started to back out and all of a sudden, my car wasn't moving. A little Asian guy had pulled up on my left and parked, looking for directions. He was more concerned with his directions than the damage to his car, and to this day, hasn't made a claim on our insurance. But I got two days for it in an effort to reduce at-fault accidents.
So I served my first day today. I had planned to take tonight off anyway, since I have to get up BEFORE the worms tomorrow to be in training at 7:30 in the morning. I worked on Tuesday for one of the guys who needed a night off. And I have my shift tomorrow. So I'm good on hours.
I have to take my second day on Thursday next week, but I have to work on Monday for one of the guys who needs the night off.
I'm kind of upset about several things going on at work, not the least of it is that second day. People have done things that were a lot worse, and gotten nothing. Example: Placing a gunbelt on top of the car and driving off without realizing it. Gunbelt falls off, police radio gets run over ($4000), gun lays in street for 30 minutes before being discovered. Verbal reprimand.
The next thing I am upset about is my upcoming light-duty. I planned my surgery for the date I did so that I could help out in dispatch since they have two pregnant dispatchers due within days of each other. I went to the supervisor to see what accommodation was being made so I could help him out. I'm gonna have to work day shift (I normally work evenings) with Wednesday and Thursday off (my current days off are Sunday, Monday, Tuesday). When I expressed my disappointment, I was told that light-duty is not guaranteed, that it's only available if we have something for the person in question to do. Okay, I get that. But explain to me the guy that is on permanent light-duty, and sits around doing ABSOLUTELY nothing all day because he has pissed so many people off that they don't know what else to do with him. That they would even SAY that to me makes me mad.
But I have a job, and I guess that's more than a lot of people these days.
I have been on an emotional roller-coaster ride lately. I realize this and think my response to the light-duty situation was caused by this. I really gotta do SOMETHING!

Unjust things like this make me want to bite nails! And every workplace I've been in has very similar situations - so it's not just in law enforcement. When someone has personality and/or job skill problems, they should be sent packing - not treated to a cushy position!! But it happens everywhere and IT'S NOT FAIR!!!
Take a breath and relax. It will all eventually work out in the cosmic wash. Life isn't fair, but it's universally unfair and the jerks will get their just desserts.
